What truth is there in Gossip? 222 rumours for 19 transfers…

Every morning, Football365’s Gossip sifts through all the transfer rumours in the papers and online – though some sources in the murkier corners of the internet we won’t repeat.

Now that the window has closed, we can wade through the whispers, tall tales and bullsh*t to see how many of the reported links actually materialised.

Since the end of last season, the Gossip has speculated over 222 different signings involving the top six.

The number of signings actually made by the top six? 19. That is a miserable conversion rate of 8.6 per cent.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Manchester United were linked with the highest number of potential new signings. This summer, 57 different players have been discussed as targets for Jose Mourinho. He signed three.

Here’s the breakdown:

1. Manchester United
Players linked: 57
Players signed: 3
Rumour success rate: 5.3%

2. Chelsea
Players linked: 48
Players signed: 4
Rumour success rate: 8.3%

=3. Liverpool

Players signed: 3 (Naby Keita was signed last year)
