Aleksandar Mitrovic is now attracting interest from Chelsea after making a goalscoring start to the season.
The Sunday Mirror are reporting that the striker who joined Fulham for ÂŁ22million has been checked out by the Blues after scoring four Premier League goals and two for Serbia last week.
But Chelsea may have to pay big money to sign him with the Mirror suggesting that his price has “rocketed” after a great opening to the new campaign.
New Stamford Bridge chief Maurizio Sarri wants to bring in another striker to bolster his options with the boss uncertain on Alvaro Morata while Olivier Giroud.
Rafa Benitez has recently made it clear he sticks by his decision to let Mitrovic go in the summer.
He said: “He is doing well but it does not change my decision.
“Each player has his own environment and can do well in one team and not as well in another.”
Benitez is in the market for a new striker in January after sending his scouts on fresh recruitment missions.
But after the club didn’t release sufficient funds to buy a star striker in the summer, he knows he could be forced into the loan market or be shopping in the bargain basement again next term.
Benitez didn’t see much of the £22million recouped for Mitrovic with Newcastle selling Adam Armstrong to help raise a £2million loan fee for Salomon Rondon.
