Lady Gaga is not in talks to star in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, despite a false report. Gossip Cop can correct the made-up story. We’ve learned the singer hasn’t been offered a role in the movie.
An article in this week’s issue of Star, which was later posted by RadarOnline, says producers of the big-screen adaptation of Wicked want Gaga to play Glinda the Good Witch, the role originated by Kristin Chenoweth on Broadway. The outlet maintains that the filmmakers came up with the idea to cast the singer following the critical and commercial success of A Star Is Born, for which she’s getting Oscar buzz.
An alleged insider tells the magazine that Gaga is considering taking on the project, but she’s hasn’t signed on yet because “she’s the kind of person who needs to feel out and bond with the people she’s going to work with.” The supposed source adds, “She’s never been hotter – or pickier – than she is now, but she knows if she wants to sign until after she wins an Oscar, they’ll have to give her even more money.”
The outlet’s article is based on claims from an anonymous “insider,” but Gossip Cop checked in with Gaga’s spokesperson, who had no knowledge of the singer being in talks for the move version of Wicked. A rep qualified to speak on the singer’s behalf surely knows more about her career than an untraceable “source.” This appears to be an example of a tabloid coming up with fantasy casting for a Hollywood production.
It’s worth noting, Hollywood trade publications almost always break major casting news, but not a single show business outlet has said anything about Gaga being in discussions for the Wicked movie. In fact, Wicked creator Stephen Schwartz told The Hollywood Reporter last month that they’re “still writing” the screenplay for the film. “Pre-production hasn’t even begun, but that could start in the not-too-distant future,” said Schwartz. It’s highly unlikely the studio behind Wicked is offering roles to actors when the film is still being written and there’s no start date scheduled.
It’s worth noting, this isn’t the first time we’ve had to debunk casting rumors surrounding the film adaptation of Wicked. In July, Gossip Cop busted Naughty Gossip for wrongly reporting that Angelina Jolie was in talks for the role of Elphaba the Wicked Witch. The big-screen musical simply isn’t in the casting stages yet.
