Design guru Bill Tikos, 48, runs The Cool Hunter website from Sydney, but every day he speaks – and usually listens – to best friend and Melbourne florist-to-the-stars Fleur McHarg, 46, a perfectionist with “an extreme life”
BILL: Sometimes you meet people, have an instant connection and they become your new best friend. That’s Fleur for me. I was setting up an event in Melbourne in 2013 and I needed a florist. Everyone recommended Fleur. At first she was quiet and shy, then something went wrong and she went off her rocker, swearing like a trooper, a real potty mouth. I thought, “I love her.” She’s the hardest working, funniest person I know.
We talk every day, mainly her calling to say, “You’re not going to believe what’s happened.” There’s so much that goes on in her life – weddings, events, high-profile people she can’t talk about, plus she’s doing breakfast, lunch and dinner for her two kids.
She has dramas every day: she’s at the Logies and Kylie Minogue tries to kick her out; the lover and the wife are in the store at the same time; she’s driving her son to school and he tells her it’s dress-up day, so she finds a safety vest in the back of the van and tells him he’s Emmet from The Lego Movie.
No one has such an extreme life. If I had her day, I’d have a breakdown but she has incredible tenacity, an unbelievable work ethic. When she’s talking, she doesn’t breathe. Sometimes I have to press mute on the phone. I still hear her but I can keep talking, I might have dinner, watch TV, talk to my partner, she’ll still be going, she doesn’t need me to say, “Yep, yep, I hear you.” I told her that two years in. She doesn’t even care.
