Rashford has found his starting opportunities limited since Alexis Sanchez arrived in January
Teddy Sheringham has suggested Marcus Rashford needs to get out from under Jose Mourinho if he wants to fulfil his potential.
The Manchester United striker, 20, has found his starting opportunities limited since Alexis Sanchez arrived in January.
In the 18 games since Sanchez made his debut in the FA Cup win over Yeovil on January 26, Rashford has started just four times.
And Treble-winner Sheringham reckons Rashford may need to move away from his old club if he is to flourish.
Speaking as a Sky pundit during United’s 0-0 draw at West Ham last night, Sheringham said: “I said at the start of the season about Marcus Rashford that he needs to play games.
“He needs to learn what he can get away with on a football pitch, what he can do, what he can’t do.
“You don’t learn that by watching other people play.
“I don’t care how good the players are, it’s all about experience, it’s about making mistakes along the way and coming up against these players week-in, week-out and knowing how to prepare to play next season and the season after that.
“But if you don’t get the experience, you don’t get the chance. All you do is sit and watch and you make mistakes later in life.
“He needs to learn now, he’s an unbelievable talent for me, and he needs to be playing in a first team somewhere.”
Mourinho denies he wants to loan out the England international for next season, despite his stinging assessment of his players – including Rashford – who started in the 1-0 defeat at Brighton last week.
The United boss said: “What does he need to do to impress me? He impresses me.
“That’s the reason why he was selected for every match of the season, absolutely every match of the season and that’s why he played in so many of them, so he doesn’t need to leave to play. He doesn’t need anything.”
