Newcastle United are interested in signing West Brom defender Craig Dawson, according to reports.

The Mail claim that the Magpies will look to take advantage of West Brom’s Premier League relegation with the signing of Dawson, although the report claims there is likely to be much interest in the centre-back, and he could cost as much as £15m.

The report names Celtic as another suitor of the 28-year-old, but say many more are likely to enter the race to secure his signature now the Baggies’ relegation has been confirmed.

Dawson has been in good form for West Brom this season, despite the side’s struggles – playing 31 games and proving a decent option for both defending and attacking set-pieces, netting two goals this term.

Newcastle fans might understandably be cautious about signing the former England under-21 international, given the fact he’s been part of a relegated team this season, although Ciaran Clark can be pointed to as a prime example of how it isn’t always a bad thing.

Sadly, Newcastle are likely to have to pay big to land Dawson though.

He has two years to run on his current West Brom deal and unfortunately it does not include a clause similar to his central defensive partner Jonny Evans, who can leave the Hawthorns for just £3m this summer because of relegation.

Elsewhere, the Mail also claim that Rafa Benitez would welcome a reunion with Fernando Torres on Tyneside.

Torres will leave Atletico Madrid on a free in the summer, with Newcastle among the clubs named as potential destinations.

Benitez managed Torres during his golden years at Liverpool, with the Spanish striker crediting the Toon boss for always getting the best out of him.

Asked yesterday about the 34-year-old, Benitez said: “Fernando is a great player. He’s an icon, an idol at Atletico Madrid and I have lots of happy memories with him.”

Don’t get too excited yet, however.

According to the report, while Benitez would love to bring him to St James’ Park, he believes the veteran striker is looking for a new challenge in a new country where he can experience a new culture.
