Ernesto Valverde isn’t having the worst first season at Barcelona, is he?
Despite being knocked out of the Champions League by Roma, the Catalan giants look set to complete the La Liga season as unbeaten champions with three games remaining.
Not bad, that.
One problem area, however, has been the signing of winger Ousmane Dembele.
Through injury and lack of form, the player – signed from Borussia Dortmund for an eye-watering ÂŁ135m – has started just nine games this season, and was recently linked with a move to Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp (jokingly) admitted his interest.
That admission, however tongue-in-cheek, kicked off a transfer-rumour frenzy, however, which has forced boss Valverde to refute the claims linking him with a move away.
“We have to realise he just got here. He’s had some injuries and getting playing time in our team is not easy,” he said.
“He’s an incredible talent, technically outstanding, he’s quick, a difference-maker.
“Maybe he needs to work on defence a little bit and some other areas. Maybe putting on pressure after we lose the ball.
“But we know he’s young, he’s had a tough season and we hope he will continue to develop next year.”
