LIMERICK‚ÄôS Willie O‚ÄôDea has dismissed a ‚ÄėPolitical Rich List‚Äô ranking the financial value of every TD in Ireland as ‚Äúlow-grade gossip‚ÄĚ.¬†
The seven TDs that represent Limerick City and County are worth more than ‚ā¨9.8m, according to a special report published by the Sunday Independent.
The special report ranked the wealth of every Irish politician’s assets, including the value of their pensions, their properties, their businesses and their interests in shares.
Fianna F√°il‚Äôs Willie O‚ÄôDea, who was ranked number 13 on the list, told the Leader he doesn‚Äôt believe it was ‚Äúvery fair‚ÄĚ to include pension value.¬†
‚ÄúI paid my contribution to my pension over a long period of time. I don‚Äôt see what the purpose of it is or how it adds to political discourse or political debate. I think it’s just low-grade gossip.‚Ä̬†
According to the report, Deputy O‚ÄôDea was found to have a total value of more than ‚ā¨3.3m, of which ‚ā¨3.06m was attributed to the value of his pension.
He was also attributed with ‚ā¨78,000 in shares and ‚ā¨184,787 in property. ¬†
‚ÄúI was a junior minister for a long, long time,‚ÄĚ Deputy O‚ÄôDea said. ‚ÄúI hope I won‚Äôt have to avail of my pension for a long time,‚ÄĚ he added.¬†
According to the report, former Finance Minister Michael Noonan is worth¬†‚ā¨2.96m, including a pension worth more than¬† ‚ā¨2.7m, with shares worth ‚ā¨91,000. Former Education Minister Jan O‚ÄôSullivan has a pension¬†worth¬†‚ā¨2.3m and Sinn Fein TD Maurice Quinlivan is valued at¬†‚ā¨126,469.
The report also found that Fianna Fail deputy Niall Collins has a pension estimated at¬†‚ā¨567,899, while Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan is valued at ‚ā¨366,297 – including ‚ā¨26,000 in shares – while first time TD Tom Neville is valued at ‚ā¨164,709.
