GROCERY GOSSIP: 11th annual Stone Soup Cook Off a huge success
09 May

The 11th annual Stone Soup Cook Off recently took place recently at Humber College’s School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism and this year proved to be the most spectacular ever.

Stone Soup is a wonderful initiative that brings together various GTA high schools to participate in a special, yearly food competition that was originally created as an after school program to help teach youth such life skills as making delicious and nutritious meals on a budget.

The competition keeps getting better thanks to the efforts of school officials, police officers from various divisions, public health nurses, parks and rec folks, corporate sponsors and a small by dynamic group of volunteers.

Judges this year included Chief Mark Saunders, Deputy Chief Peter Yuen and Dillon Brooks from the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.

This year five schools participated, including Archbishop Romero Catholic Secondary School, George Harvey Collegiate Institute, Kipling Collegiate Institute, Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School and Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute.

This year’s theme was based on international cuisine – all the students rose to the challenge and created a variety of dishes that were restaurant-worthy. But there could only be one winner and this year George Harvey Collegiate Institute took first place. Many notable food companies generously contributed to the bursary program, which went out to 12 deserving students. All in all, another successful year for Stone Soup!
