Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley is swapping pining for the object of his affections by posting about everything she does online for using everything the object of his affections posts online to win her over in the first trailer for his dark new series YOU.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes, YOU was given a 10-episode straight-to-series order by Lifetime back in April last year and today (May 9) UK viewers were given their first glimpse of the series courtesy of its new UK home, Netflix.
“There you were,” Badgley’s character Joe says in the clip. “Every account set to public. You want to be seen, heard, known. Of course, I obliged.”
Backed by a haunting cover of Cheap Trick’s ‘I Want You to Want Me’, the trailer wastes no time in diving straight into Joe’s obsessive thoughts as he exploits technology to win the heart of Beck (Once Upon a Time‘s Elizabeth Lail), transforming himself from stalker to boyfriend all the while.
“There are scary people in the world, Beck,” Joe continues. “Jealousy got the best of me. How, exactly, does one get rid of a body?”
The series also stars Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell as Beck’s best friend Peach, who makes her suspicions about Joe clear.
And with good reason, too, as it soon becomes clear that Joe is willing to do whatever it takes to eliminate all obstacles standing in the way of his relationship with Beck – even if it means murder.
YOU is set to premiere on Lifetime in the US on September 8, and hopefully UK fans will get a chance to watch it on Netflix not too long afterwards.
